NEW Inventions

John J. Loud, an American, received the first patent for a ballpoint pen in 1888. However, it was not commercially successful and eventually his patent expired. László Bíró, a lawyer and occasional inventor from Hungary, wanted a pen that could write on rough materials as well as paper. He made significant improvements to the design and invented a practical ballpoint pen, which appeared in 1943. Bíró's frustration with fountain pens, which required constant refilling and often caused smudges, led him to create a pen using fast-drying ink similar to newsprint ink, which wouldn't flow from a normal pen nib. Helped by his brother Georg, Bíró devised a roller-ball tip with a tiny ball-bearing that would roll over the paper surface, picking up ink from the ink cartridge inside and applying it to the paper on the outside. While on holiday, the Bíró brothers met an amiable old man who suggested they try to market the pen in Argentina. The RAF had meanwhile taken up their idea because ...

Japanese in Australia guy

He lives in a homestay with his host mother. His rent includes breakfast and dinner on weekdays and all meals on weekends. For lunch, he cooks rice from Thailand, which is cheap, mixed with oats and sometimes tuna. He walks 20,000 steps daily, as his school is 5 kilometers away. His school hours are from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. He wakes up at 6:30 AM to leave by 7:30 AM. He plans to speak only English, even with Japanese friends, to improve his language skills. He encourages viewers to subscribe and like his videos for motivation.

Inventions

Invention: Ball-point Pen  John J. When Milton Reynolds and Francis Horne started selling ballpoint pens in 1945, they quickly became popular worldwide. The invention of the ballpoint pen is often credited to László Bíró because of his important improvements to the design. A ballpoint pen is a writing tool that uses a small rotating ball to put ink on paper, allowing for smooth and controlled writing. Ink in ballpoint pens is often pushed by a piston, spring, and capillary action to keep the ink flowing consistently. Fountain pens have caps and the ink flows smoothly from the tip. The ballpo...

Soap

We had been using soap for about 5000 years, from the time of Babylon. Three and a half thousand years ago Egyptians washed themselves with soap regularly. The Egyptians also used a kind of soap to wash wool, prior to spinning and weaving. The Romans didn't use soap for cleaning themselves but used oil instead. Later, the Romans manufactured soap from ashes and animal fat, but for hairdressing, not for cleaning. After the Romans, the Germans and Gauls used soap the same way: the men would use it in their hair to look fierce before they went into battle. After the year 600, soap was mainly manufactured in Palestine and Iraq. In Arab countries soap was made from olive oil mixed with sodium lye, and the formula for soap has not changed much since then. Modern soap is perfumed and colored, but so were those historic Arab soaps. Some Western countries were slow to use soap since personal hygiene wasn't considered so important. It was only in the late 19th century that you could buy ...

Japanese guy

Those Japanese were doing their best. I thought "icluding" was very good for easy-to-use English. I think it is good because I often use it myself. What he wanted to say was to be good at speaking English anyway and to know a lot of words. I think you can speak very smoothly by thinking about your paragraphs in advance.

About Geothermal Power Generation

Geothermal power is a way to make electricity using heat from inside the Earth. It is a type of renewable energy. The Earth's core has a lot of power, about 1 million gigawatts. To use this heat, we need to drill deep into the ground. Right now, we can drill 20 km in 100 days. In the future, we might use a laser with a drill to make it faster. Also, the cost of drilling is getting cheaper, which is good. A map shows that it is easier to make geothermal power in the western United States.

5/15

There are waves in the ocean. There are Maori people singing in the ship with their guitar, or singing traditional songs under the lamps. Other people are moving the steering wheel.

Smart Goals

What is smart Goals In our journey to achieve success, setting clear and achievable goals is crucial. This is where SMART goals come into play. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. My goal Post and exercise on a road bike every day. Cycling both to and from work provides regular and additional exercise. Always do this except on rainy days.

Micheal’s class student

Today I had the opportunity to speak with a student in Michael's class. They were a small group with only about 7 students. For me, I prefer small groups. Because I can concentrate more in a small group. There were many other interesting things. The first was that he spoke very softly and adjusted his English speaking speed. We had a very good conversation. My English is not very good, but they spoke to me in a friendly way. I was very happy and I learned that students in Dunedin, New Zealand are very kind. Secondly, there are many people who play sports as a hobby. I was impressed that Japanese people play rugby. I also saw Chinese people playing basketball, which I thought was very nice. I had a very good experience in this exchange.

Musical Artist

Artist name "Charlie Puth" The best o-music artist for study in my opinion is Charlie Puth. Because some of the songs are in English that we can easily understand and the speed at which they are sung is not too fast. Other types of music are also easy to understand because most people listen to them, so I thought it would be easy for everyone to understand and use. Examples of songs that are easy to study are "Girlfriend" and "See you Again". These artists are great for studying lyrics and improving speaking skills. I listen to a lot of his songs. I like this artist because I think the lyrics are good.

AI report

AI report using copilot The students from Japan said they want real stuff to learn and talk about in class. They like doing things that help them get better at English without too many breaks. The plan is to be clear about what we're doing, do projects on serious topics, keep going even if some students aren't paying attention, and focus on English for engineering. We want to get them ready for different cultures, focusing on how to use English practically instead of worrying too much about grammar rules. They'll do a lot of evaluating themselves and each other, not just the teacher. We want them to behave well, talk to each other, and take charge of their own learning.

Books I want to read

There are two books I would like to read. The first is a book about road biking. I am a road bike rider and I am interested in mechanicals, so I would like to read books about road bikes to gain knowledge. Right now there is the Giro d'Italia race, which is very interesting. The second is a book about cars. My father is a Ferrari engineer and I am very interested in it. But I have already read a lot and have some knowledge but I want to know more. Especially I would like to know more about F1.

5/1

Cycling in Rain Condition Today I went to school in the morning in the rain. I slipped very easily in Dunedin because of all the ups and downs. I drove safely and did not have an accident. I use a road bike and was able to get to school very fast. On a rainy day I could get to school in 11 minutes. Tomorrow the weather is supposed to be sunny, so I thought I could go a little faster. The best thing is that the bike paths in Dunedin are very wide. I thought it was very safe and good for me. I will continue cycling in the future and I want to do it safely and have fun!

Language 5/1

About Language My homestay family is Chinese and Thai. The mother was Thai and they spoke Thai sometimes. I had no idea. What was interesting was that sometimes it sounded like Japanese. For example, “Samui” sounds like Japanese. I also heard some sounds in English, which was fun for me. I thought that Chinese and Thai are a little bit similar. I also need to speak Italian for my future, so I want to do my best next year. Of course, I want to master English this year. To do so, I want to learn it by talking with many foreigners and homestay families.
